Moon-Door, 2018-
Moon-Door is a mixed media visual work where Jungbom creates a door to her inner world. She uses strips of mother of pearl on the image she photographed to create the invisible door, reminding her to seek within.
Born in South Korea, Hannah Jo Jungbom grew up in four different countries, getting lost. Moving to America, her confusion in life and identity exploded, yet it is United states of America where she finally found a way to back to herself.
In 2018, Moon-Door finally made its first appearance on a full moon night in Tybee beach in Savannah where she envisioned a small pearl under the ocean glowing silently, perhaps it was herself.
“I was always fascinated by the concept of a door, there is a sense of mystery, excitement, unknown and infinite possibility. Door in Korean is pronounced as [mu:n] and I saw strangely beautiful connection between a door and the moon.”
Opening the door as she talks to the moon, as she talks to herself. The door symbolizing her inner world, in-between, and realities, is a reminder to seek within. The meditative process of pasting strips of mother of pearl to create the inner door grounds herself within.
“Everything starts from within, and all the answers are within. The moon in my heart, a door in the sky.”
